The Most Important Conversation in AI Right Now

Title is clickbait and an overstatement, but … It really is a good conversation ‘in AI’, in the sense of looping back and looking at things from an old-fashioned ‘open source’ or free software point of view. That is a thing, even now, and the proprietary closed-source options all come from US capitalism, while the free or open options are mostly all Chinese (maybe you could throw the French connection, Mistral, into that mix too). So … the Empire, in its death throes, is probably going to try to ban the competition, and that won’t go well for them. Keep an eye on kimi.com for a start, while you still can.

The presentation here is pure unbearable AI slop, but the content, reading between the lines unearths some really thought-provoking shit. If you want the ideas in a more palatable form, hunt on Robert Sapolsky, and in particular his Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will (2023). I think you might find it oddly liberating in some twisted way. (Here’s an example. Alex is cool.)
