He was a household name with a TV show named after him by the time I was born.
Growing up, we watched. After we came to the Southwest, he was notable in this way. On the way down the hill into the big city, you cross a smaller road called the Carefree Highway (see also Gordon Lightfoot). My father mentioned that Dick Van Dyke lived down that road, and he mentioned it acidly.
Why didn’t he like the guy?
Probably because DVD’s politics were sane and moral way back then, too. Daddy was practically a John Bircher.
Also, he consorted with Jews. And clearly he still does that, too. So say we all.
