In fact, I believe there’s a significant relationship between the lofty ideals about getting educated, and Civilization itself, including but not limited to civilized notions like plantation slavery, and our so much more refined wage slavery.
In my last gasping years of being a professor, the thing that hurt worst was that the academic bobbleheads were solely preaching to their student customers about how a degree was the ticket to a good job.
And that was all.
You have to play the game our way if you don’t want to end up a career french-fry salesman, see kid?

“Schoolhouses are a lot cheaper than revolutions.”
They knew. They know. They’ve always known.
