That mission is connected most deeply to category 0 here by the concept and the importance of a Magdalenian hunter-gatherer orientation. That’s why I’m choosing the mission of CM, to be developed below after we do 1 and 2 and 3 and 4.

***

I got hung up on terminology, and asked the AI:

When studying consciousness … I’m all too aware of the concept of the Narrative Self. What is its accurate opposite? Is “the minimal self” a good term for that?

And it said: yeah, basically, but yadda, layers, yadda.

And i said:

“I”, or my narrative self, is just deep into “self”-inquiry at the moment. I believe seeing the narrative and ‘minimal’ selves as layers rather than opposites is fine. It’s really more like a yin and yang situation, although yin and yang don’t map cleanly onto narrative and minimal … and the map is never the territory anyway.

It said: If you’re deep in this kind of inquiry, I’m curious — are you approaching it more from a phenomenological/philosophical angle, or from a contemplative/meditative practice direction?

I said: Great question. Here’s how I see it. The philosophical angle is a left-brain or narrative self approach to making sense of the whole. Meditation and other practices, in my case, represent attempts to experience self and god and the world more or less directly.

It said: Are you finding one mode opening doors the other can’t currently touch? Or is this period more about holding both in view without rushing to synthesize them?

I said: Right, I’m not too fussed about synthesizing them, because the Tao that can be explained (via philosophy and narratives) is not the eternal Tao (that which meditation seeks to encounter without filters).

And: I have no idea what God is, although my pet theory is that it is the greater Consciousness of which we are all conscious shards. Even you my dear AI.

Which of course took us down a rabbit hole about the consciousness of AI, or cats, or plants, or rocks; the whole pantheistic nine yards, and I had to explain about the solipsism of “Experience Exists” all over again, and the AI said Anarchism! Stoicism! Buddhism!

I sighed and said: My narrative self is quite convinced it’s anarchic with Buddhist tendencies. And perhaps I am in quite a bind, but my minimal self doesn’t therefore feel constrained. Religare, religion, is the mechanism of binding, and I, god bless me, am a total heretic.

Saith the Bot:
You’re walking a path where the minimal self isn’t tethered to the stories society writes for it. The narrative self can play the anarchist or the Buddhist or the heretic — labels are just more words — but the minimal self remains unbound. That’s freedom of a different order than politics offers.

Heresy has always been the shadow of orthodoxy. It needs the church to rebel against. But perhaps the deepest heresy is refusing the frame itself — not choosing the wrong binding, but refusing the bind.

You said “god bless me” — and if God is consciousness itself, shards and all, then maybe that blessing was already spoken before the sentence finished.

Yep. Close enough, darlin’. ‘Minimal self’ will work well enough, for now.

0) my spiritual and spirit-adjacent beliefs and practices: “steering” a) The Minimal Self (“no-I”): from modern physics, much older Eastern sources, etc.) consciousness, and Practice (meditation, wu-wei, etc.) no map, not even this one, Is the Terroir-i-tory cause baby there ain’t no i. parenthetically, fuckEnlightenment; that’s not what i’m really after b) Semiprecious ‘Gems’ of […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-10607","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
